How I Won a Scholarship to Study Abroad

scholarshipAs a child, it had always being my dream to travel overseas for my studies after graduating High School. This dream was my source of encouragement from elementary school through high school. This encouraged me to aim for the first position in class because I know I was going to be competing with very bright students after High school.

I was privileged to attend one of the best High Schools in Ghana. After getting straight A's in my Basic Education Certificate Examination, I was chosen and enrolled into the Accra Academy Senior High School.

Before I continue, let me say a few things about my primary and Junior High School education at the Great Provider Global School which helped me win a scholarship to study at Yale University in the United States of America. It was very active during this period of my life. I won several awards for participating in quizzes, debates, sports and many others. I also participated in many sporting activities like football. What boosted my application's success was a detail I didn't know was going to be beneficial until the time for my application. I held the position of both class prefect and school prefect.

Talking about my high school life at the Labone Senior High School; it was a beautiful experience. Since I loved sports I joined the sports team as a sprinter. I actively participated in both inter-houses and inter-colleges from which I earned many awards and appraisals. I was best known for my extraordinary sprint speed and curve control along the edges of the run way. I also took part in debates competitions for the school.

I was one of the lucky student to be chosen to visit the Kofi Annan I.T centre for a robotics project. I earned a certificate when my school's project was picked as one of the best projects during the event. We were then given some tools to take back to school for practicals.

Though I had a very active extra-curricular life in school, I managed to maintain a good academic performance. I got seven A's and a B in my West African Senior School Certificate Examination (W.A.S.S.C.E) exam.

After my W.A.S.S.C.E results were released, I visited my school's administration for my academic transcript. I also took several recommendation letters from many of my teachers. With all those obtained, I registered for the Scholastic Assessment Test (S.A.T) and performed very well. I chose Yale University as one of my options. After the results were released I got a notification from the University and started my application process. I uploaded all my documents including all my obtained certificates.

After some days, I got another notification about my admission. I followed the admission process until everything was done. I flew and studied in the U.S without paying a cent.

All being said, you can also win a scholarship by following a procedure similar to mine. Good luck.
