Teacher Unions kick against new govt-teacher recruitment policy

Some Teacher Unions are kicking against a new policy which requires fresh teachers to go through job interviews.

The policy is meant to select only the best teachers for postings. All fresh teachers hitherto had automatic placement in schools.

Education Minister Professor Naana Agyeman said the new policy is part of reforms to improve teaching and learning.

But the Coalition of Concerned Teachers say the policy is irrelevant.

The president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Christian Addai Poku, suggested that pre-admission interviews into Teacher colleges must rather be the way to go.

Some teacher trainees who agreed with Mr. Addai Poku said the process will be too cumbersome.

But Deputy Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa defends the policy. According to him, the process will also help ensure that teachers get evenly distributed across the nation.

Meanwhile, teacher trainees in Tamale are demonstrating against Government’s decision to scrap allowances of Teachers in the Training Colleges of Education.

They presented their petition to the Northern Regional Minister.
